The Medieval City of Sarlat can be discovered on foot, park the car outside and set off for a journey through time. If its Saturday market (all day throughout the city) is a real institution, it is also the day when there are the most people. We advise you either to come very early or to choose another day (the market is also on Wednesday)…
Sarlat is close to the Dordogne Valley, where you can continue your walk just a few minutes drive away. In the direction of the Lot (in the other direction), there are also sites and villages of interest: the pretty Water Gardens of Carsac-Aillac, the Château de Fénelon, the Zoological Reserve of Calviac…
More than 65 listed monuments, it is said that Sarlat is the city with the highest density of historical monuments in the world. Wherever you look, it’s beautiful. The Maison de la Boétie, The Fountain of Mary, the Place du Marché aux Oies, Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral or the Church of Sainte-Marie, The Lantern of the Dead, The House of the Présidial… We do not have enough space for make the list! World-renowned, it is a spearhead for our department and a gem to discover by taking your time. The great men of spirit and the artists who frequented this city, also felt the particular atmosphere which reigns in this open-air history book. Wander through the narrow alleys, don’t be shy and sneak around. Raise your eyes beyond the yellow cut stones of the mansions and private mansions to admire the brown tile or slate roofs, the arcaded windows, the turrets, the half-timbered houses…
In Sarlat, it’s beautiful, but it’s also very good. There are many restaurants, shops and local produce shops. There is a Saturday (all day) and Wednesday (morning) market, a covered market in the Sainte-Marie church, there is also a foie gras market in winter, a truffle market at the beginning of year, an organic market… In short, there is something to eat on every street corner, not to mention the producers who are well established and who will not fail to satisfy your thirst for seeing and tasting the wonders made from duck (at all sauces, in all forms), goose, foie-gras, preserves, alcohols too, nut specialties… There are many restaurants in Sarlat, for all budgets, of all styles even if there is a lot of duck and delicious Sarladaise potatoes! You will not hesitate to ask us for advice for a good table!
