The 3 towns where our houses are located are all very close to the super valley of the Dordogne. Wider than the Vézère valley, it is the valley of the castles which enjoys an exceptional natural, cultural, historical and heritage.
Positioned to the south of the Medieval City of Sarlat, the basin of the Dordogne river is also classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the richest rivers in France in terms of biodiversity and it joins the Vézère at Limeuil, then the Garonne at the Bec d’Ambès to become the Gironde up to the estuary of the same name. The Dordogne Valley is made up of castles, steep villages built on impressive rocky promontories, all very close to each other, for quality daily getaways, just a few minutes’ drive away.
The Dordogne Valley is a wonder for the whole family, in summer you will also enjoy nightly gourmet markets, with a festive atmosphere and delicacies to taste at the small stands of producers.
Château de Castelnaud and its Museum of War in the Middle Ages, Château de Beynac perched on its rock, Château des Milandes residences of Joséphine Baker, Château de Monfort, Château de Fénelon… It’s a real festival, a delight for lovers of history and heritage. At each look, a castle and they are all positioned vis-à-vis each other, they gaze at each other as in the time of the Wars of Religion where the torment of quarrels between the French and the English are still audible for who knows how to listen to the whispering of old stones… Take the whole family to these modern tourist sites, with playful museography, entertainment and breathtaking panoramas.
The steep village of Beynac, the grandiose ensemble of La Roque-Gageac to admire on a barge along the water, Domme and its breathtaking view which embraces the entire valley at 180 degrees from its esplanade… These are the best known , but a multitude of small peaceful villages also await you such as Monfort, Carsac-Aillac, Vitrac, Saint-Cybranet and Daglan along the small Céou stream… Saint-Vincent de Cosse, Saint-Cyprien (its Eiffel, its church and its famous market). Upstream and downstream of these destinations, everything is to be seen and discovered! Take along a picnic full of local products, to pick up at the market or from local producers whose farms are dotted along the road and paths. Taste traditional dishes in Périgord restaurants with foie-gras, Périgord truffles, walnuts, Périgord strawberries, we have a multitude of sweet and savory flavors for all palates, to accompany with excellent wines from Bergeac Duras.
Impossible not to take a canoe kayak trip on the Dordogne. Wider and more tumultuous than the Vézère, the Dordogne is nevertheless suitable for all levels, especially in summer when its draft is weaker. Do you prefer to be guided? Take a trip in a barge or take off in a hot air balloon, for a baptism that will offer you unforgettable landscapes. Visit the gardens of the Dordogne, such as that of Marqueyssac, the Garden of the Château des Milandes, a bamboo grove… You will also find leisure parks with tree climbing and other sports activities, take your sneakers to explore the many paths signposted hikes in the region (everywhere in the department). Rent a bike and explore the small roads, ride at your own pace and do not hesitate to opt for an electric bike if the elevation scares you. And of course, don’t forget the swimsuit, if you want to change from the swimming pools of our gîtes, the Dordogne is equipped with beautiful pebble beaches, there are also leisure bases on nearby lakes such as in Tamniès.
